Auditory symptoms following traumatic brain injury (TBI), including mild TBI and concussion, are common, under-recognised, and often misattributed to non-auditory causes. Tinnitus, hyperacusis, hearing loss, and central auditory processing difficulties can substantially disrupt recovery across the lifespan by increasing sensory load, impairing communication, and limiting participation in work, education, and rehabilitation.
This webinar will provide an overview of the auditory consequences of concussion and TBI, highlighting how hearing-related symptoms can have a significant impact on cognitive, emotional, and functional recovery. The session will explore how traumatic injury can affect both peripheral and central auditory systems, resulting in a range of symptoms that may persist long after other concussion symptoms have resolved.
BIO
Duncan Hann, (BSc, MAud (Hons), MNZAS-CCC), is a Senior Clinical Audiologist and founder of Hann Audiology, specialising in tinnitus and sound sensitivity for adults and children, delivered both in person and via Telehealth. With 25 years of clinical experience and personal insight from living with moderate hearing loss and previously suffering from severe tinnitus, Duncan brings together audiology, tinnitus neuroscience, and evidence-based psychological strategies in his practice. He completed a Master of Audiology at the University of Auckland, focusing his thesis on sound therapy for tinnitus, and has contributed research to the field of tinnitus management. Duncan has been a full member of the New Zealand Audiological Society since 2003, and serves as a guest lecturer and research fellow at the University of Canterbury, as well as a research fellow at Victoria University of Wellington. Through his PhD at the University of Auckland, he is working collaboratively toward an integrated, culturally responsive tinnitus care pathway for Aotearoa New Zealand.
